Both chambers are in session this week.
House Republicans will now begin their push to enact a single reconciliation package that includes President Trump’s key policy priorities, including immigration enforcement, tax cuts, and changes to the federal Medicaid program. Committees will begin holding markups this week, focusing first on border security and defense spending. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has set an ambitious deadline of Memorial Day for passage of the bill in the lower chamber. However, Johnson has a difficult road ahead since deficit hawks and conservative members of his party continue their calls for deep spending cuts to offset any tax cuts, while moderates have expressed concerns about any changes to Medicaid.
Although the Senate has yet to announce its markup schedule, Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and other key congressional leaders will be meeting this week with President Trump and White House officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to discuss further strategy.
The House will also vote on repealing five Biden-era regulations under the Congressional Review Act, including: letting California set its own emissions standards for trucks (H. J. Res. 87), cars (H. J. Res. 88), and medium- to heavy-duty trucks and other engines (H. J. Res. 89); designating the longfin smelt endangered (H. J. Res. 78); and blocking off-road vehicles on 24 miles of park roads in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (H.J. Res 60).
The upper chamber will resume considering the nomination of former Senator David Perdue (R-GA) to be ambassador to China. Thune has also filed cloture on more ambassador nominations, including Warren Stephens to the UK, Thomas Barrack to Turkey, and Tilman Fertitta to Italy.
The rest of the world will also continue watching for any announcements on trade deals between the United States and other nations, after Trump announced, and then quickly paused, large “reciprocal tariffs” on individual countries with which the United States has the largest trade deficits.
