Both chambers are in session this week. House and Senate Republican leaders will continue working on a compromise budget resolution that could reach the Senate floor later this week. The resolution will establish formal plans for a reconciliation package on President Trump’s key policy priorities, including immigration enforcement and tax policy.
The House will hold votes this week on a bill that would prohibit federal district judges from issuing nationwide orders blocking administrative policies (H.R. 1526); the SAVE Act (H.R. 22), which would require voters participating in federal elections to provide proof of citizenship to register; and two resolutions that would end more of the Biden Administration’s rules – a cap on the overdraft fees large banks can charge (S. J. Res. 18) and bank-like stipulations targeting digital payment platforms run by Apple, Google, and Facebook (S. J. Res. 28).
The House may also vote on a Senate-passed bill that would restore the District of Columbia’s ability to utilize its current budget allotment after the continuing resolution that was passed by Congress earlier this month restricted the district’s spending authority. Trump has advocated publicly for swift passage of the legislation.
The Senate will vote on the nomination of Matthew Whitaker to be ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The upper chamber will also vote on a resolution that would end the national emergency President Trump declared as a legal mechanism to impose tariffs on Canada.
Many eyes will be on the White House this week. On Wednesday, which Trump is calling “Liberation Day,” the Administration is expected to announce a broad swathe of retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of countries. There is also the potential that the current tariff carveouts for Mexico and Canada will end, although it is difficult to predict exact White House action on trade for this week.
