Alston & Bird has expanded its litigation capabilities with the addition of food and beverage partner Angela Spivey in the firm’s Atlanta office.
Spivey arrives from McGuireWoods LLP, where she served as deputy chair of its food and beverage industry team and Atlanta office managing partner. She is accompanied by senior associate Laura Venker, also from McGuireWoods, who joins Alston & Bird in Washington, D.C.
“Angela has a superb reputation in the food and beverage space for her outstanding litigation and regulatory counsel,” said Kristy Brown, Alston & Bird partner and co-leader of the firm’s Litigation & Trial Practice Group. “She is absolutely one of the premier litigators in an industry grappling with a surge in lawsuits that shows no signs of letting up.”
Spivey defends food makers, suppliers, distributors, and packagers in high-exposure class action litigation over labeling, packaging, advertising, and other claims, as well as U.S. Department of Justice criminal investigations. She also advises clients on regulatory and compliance issues stemming from U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalls, safety alerts, and foodborne illness outbreak investigations.
A leading voice in the industry, Spivey is co-author of Food Safety Law, the definitive guide on the subject now in its seventh edition, published by ALM Media. She is a regular speaker at industry conferences sponsored by the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Defense Research Institute, and American Bar Association and a frequent commentator on industry legal and business issues for The Wall Street Journal, Law360, Food Manufacturing, and other media. In 2016, The National Law Journal honored her with its prestigious “Litigation Trailblazer” award for her success in defending food companies through innovative legal strategies.
“Angela is highly respected within the food and beverage industry,” said Janine Brown, partner in charge of Alston & Bird’s Atlanta office. “A true thought leader and trusted counsel on legal and business issues, Angela is a terrific addition to our roster of local and national A-list litigators and a natural choice for any food and beverage client seeking a top-notch team.”
Spivey is the latest food and beverage attorney to join Alston & Bird. Last year, the firm added partners Bo Phillips, who The American Lawyer named among the top 25 laterals of 2017, and Tom Evans in San Francisco. The hiring continued with the addition of Los Angeles partner Jeff Rosenfeld earlier this year.
