Alston & Bird has been named a recipient of the Legal Services Corporation’s Pro Bono Service Award in recognition of the firm’s commitment to equal justice.
Alston & Bird, along with the legal department of United Parcel Services Inc., were recognized for their five-year partnership with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society to provide pro bono legal assistance to relatives and caregivers in need of guardianships for impaired adults and minor children.
Presenting the award to Alston & Bird Pro Bono Partner Mary Benton were Roy Barnes, former Georgia governor; John Levi and James Sandman, chairman and president of the Legal Services Corporation, respectively; and Patrick T. O’Connor, president of the State Bar of Georgia.
The Legal Services Corporation is an independent nonprofit established by Congress in 1974 to provide financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans. The Corporation currently provides funding to 133 independent nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
