International Arbitration

• Representing one of the world’s largest pure research & development companies in an ICC arbitration regarding valuation of patent license that includes standard essential patents.
• Representing global telecommunications company in an ICC arbitration regarding intellectual property indemnification obligations in a supply agreement.
• Representing a global investment firm in an UNCITRAL arbitration against the Algerian government involving violations of an international bilateral investment treaty.
• Representing foreign investors in an ICSID arbitration against the Republic of Azerbaijan pertaining to a joint venture with SOCAR, the state-owned oil company, under the Energy Charter Treaty.
• Represented Middle Eastern investors in two commercial arbitrations challenging African governments’ termination of a railway concession.

Commercial Litigation

• Represented global telecommunications company in litigation involving patent licensing and FRAND obligations.
• Obtained a preliminary injunction against a county government on behalf of client whose facility had been unlawfully shut down by the county government. Subsequently obtained summary judgment declaring the county had no authority to close the facility.

Thomas Grantham focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation and international arbitration, representing clients in a wide range of industries, including technology, telecommunications, and construction. He has represented clients in connection with arbitral proceedings held in accordance with various major institutional and ad hoc rules, including the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) rules. Thomas also has experience representing clients in high-stakes disputes involving intellectual property, including FRAND obligations and complex valuation matters.

Thomas earned his J.D., manga cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he served as an editor for the Georgia Law Review and inducted into the Order of Barristers and the Order of the Coif. Before attending law school, Thomas was a senior manager at an expert consulting firm where he assisted clients in construction disputes across the globe, including Europe, the Middle East, and Central America.
