Alston & Bird has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the New York City Bar Association in honor of the environmental leadership and advocacy of the firm’s New York office.
The award, made by the New York City Bar’s Environmental Law Committee, credits Alston & Bird for its green business practices in New York and as a founding member of the national Law Firm Sustainability Network (LFSN), an organization created in 2011 to promote environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility among law firms and legal departments.
Under the leadership of Alston & Bird partner Peter Masaitis, former president of LFSN, the organization launched in 2015 the American Legal Industry Sustainability Standard (ALISS), an online self-assessment tool that measures law firms’ environmental sustainability. In 2017, the firm earned an ALISS Silver Award for enhancing its sustainability programs and practices.
Alston & Bird has also made other significant investments in its green credentials. For example, in addition to promoting comprehensive recycling, waste reduction, and reuse programs in all its offices, the firm purchases 50 percent of its electricity from wind farms. Also, the firm’s Atlanta office building is certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold – the third-largest law firm space in the world to achieve this recognition – while its Los Angeles office is housed in a LEED-certified building.
