MEET THE HIRING PARTNERS
- Why did you choose to practice law and how did you decide to practice in your particular area of law?
I liked writing, wanted a professional “craft” instead of a “job,” and frankly didn’t have any better ideas. I chose litigation to spend more time writing. I’m so thankful that things worked out – I generally love my work. But I would advise law students to do more research than I did (see question number 4 below).
- What do you like best about being Hiring Partner?
This is one of the really fun parts of my job. I enjoy helping law students through the daunting process of recruiting season. I enjoy contributing to Alston & Bird’s amazing culture by hiring our next generation of talent. Perhaps my favorite part is calling with good news.
- In your opinion, what makes Alston & Bird a great place to work?
The number of people here who want to help me succeed. I’ve always felt that my colleagues here want to lift me up instead of compete against me. The partners were transparent about career development paths and cared (and still care) about helping me progress. When I lateraled to Alston & Bird as an associate, I went from feeling uncertain about my future to quickly knowing I wanted to join this partnership and understanding how to get there.
- If there was one piece of (career) advice you could provide to a law student, what would it be?
Get to know practicing lawyers and what they like and dislike about their careers. You have a great opportunity to talk to lawyers through OCI/recruiting (people at firms you interview with will often be happy to stay in touch), bar association opportunities for law students, and alumni networks. I didn’t know many lawyers when I was a law student and didn’t think they would want to take time to talk to a student. But lawyers are usually happy to talk about their careers and give advice.
- What was the most memorable recruiting experience for you personally as a law student?
Receiving the phone call with an offer for a summer associate position, which I immediately accepted. I remember exactly where I was standing, who I was speaking with, and the feeling that this was a life-changing moment.
- What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Painting, skiing, hiking, reading, running, traveling…. I like hobbies that help me disconnect and remember how big the world is.
- What is your favorite quote?
“Pressure is a privilege.” “Have fun!” – Two of my childhood tennis coaches.
- Who inspires you and why?
Anybody who is excellent at what they do, has fun doing it, and cares about doing it the morally right way. I’m lucky to have many colleagues who fit this description.
