Last fall, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order calling on the state to cease issuing permits for hydraulic fracturing by 2024. Heeding the governor’s call but going even further, state lawmakers this year introduced Senate Bill 467, which would prohibit, as of Jan. 1, 2022, the issuance or renewal of any permit for fracking and other unconventional oil and gas extraction techniques. This article reviews the details of Senate Bill 467, how it failed by one vote to advance out of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water, and what may await the bill’s future.
