Hon. Betty Weinberg Ellerin, senior counsel in Alston & Bird’s Litigation & Trial Practice Group, has been honored by the Fund for Modern Courts for her exceptional commitment to public service throughout her career.
Recognized by the organization with its 2019 “Career Public Service Award,” Justice Ellerin was singled out for her government service and the pursuit of justice, fairness, inclusiveness, and equal opportunity in the judicial system of New York State.
Before joining Alston & Bird, Justice Ellerin held many significant roles in the New York state court system. Her service included more than 20 years as a jurist in the Appellate Division, where she was the first woman appointed to the First Judicial Department and the only woman to date who has served as the department’s presiding justice. She was also the first woman appointed as the state’s deputy chief administrative judge for New York City courts.
Currently, Justice Ellerin serves on a committee that screens and recommends candidates for gubernatorial appointment to the New York State Court of Claims and is vice chair of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics of the New York State Unified Court System. She is also chair of the New York State Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts and chair of the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board.
Founded in 1955, the Fund for Modern Courts is an independent, statewide court reform organization committed to improving New York’s judicial system.
