Alston & Bird has been honored by the Atlanta chapter of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) as a leader in pro bono legal services for unaccompanied children in U.S. immigration court proceedings.
Recognized with the chapter’s first-ever “Pro Bono Team Excellence Award” were Alston & Bird partner Cara Peterman and associates Sean Bedford, Marcos Alvarez, Max Rubinson, and Ana Kim.
The team was honored for its response to KIND’s urgent call for assistance after a client, a female teenager, fled persecution in her home country. Undertaking a hearing, multiple rounds of briefing, and a complex appeals process, the team won withholding of the teen’s removal and she was released from detention. The team continues to fight for her to be granted asylum on appeal.
Founded in 2008 by Angelina Jolie and the Microsoft Corporation, KIND provides pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied children entering the U.S. immigration system through chapters in 10 U.S. cities.
