This event will include a comprehensive discussion about the complexities of employee recruiting and hiring in the face of ever-changing employment laws at the federal, state, and local levels. Our conversation will focus on:
- Background checks: Many employers conduct background checks on applicants after a conditional offer of employment is extended. We will discuss technical compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and similar state laws, ban-the-box laws, and challenges that arise when employers base employment decisions on information obtained in a background check.
- Marijuana: The legalization and decriminalization of marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes poses challenges for employers who conduct pre-employment drug screening and/or employ workers in safety-sensitive positions. We will talk about how employers can navigate the patchwork of laws regarding marijuana use and relevant legal developments in this area.
- Religious accommodations: Upon hire or at other times during the employment relationship, employees may request religious accommodations. Our conversation will address how to respond appropriately to such requests, including requests for schedule changes and exemptions from dress codes, appearance standards, and flu shot requirements.
