Alston & Bird has bolstered its antitrust capabilities with the addition of former U.S. Justice Department official John Snyder as an antitrust partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office and the appointment of partner Adam Biegel to lead the office’s Antitrust Practice.
“The arrival of John and Adam is an unprecedented opportunity for us in the most high-profile antitrust market in the world,” said Teresa Bonder, chair of Alston & Bird’s Antitrust Practice. “Both have broad knowledge and insight into the inner workings of the government’s policies and priorities for investigating anticompetitive conduct, and clients will value their solid command of the challenges and complexities of national and cross-border antitrust requirements, as well as the work of the federal enforcement agencies.”
Snyder joins from the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, where he served for more than two years as counsel to Assistant Attorney General William Baer. In this role, he played an integral part in the division’s Front Office team, advising the Assistant Attorney General on a wide range of civil and criminal matters, including merger and nonmerger investigations, enforcement actions and competition policy initiatives. He worked with Deputy Assistant Attorneys General to supervise key matters, including recent investigations in the telecommunications, technology and healthcare sectors.
Prior to that position, Snyder spent 10 years as a senior trial attorney in the Antitrust Division’s Transportation, Energy & Agriculture Section. He served as lead attorney on numerous antitrust investigations, with an emphasis on oilfield services, energy and agriculture markets. He also served in leadership roles on high-priority litigations in telecommunications, payment services and other industries, including such matters as U.S. v. American Express, U.S. v. AT&T and T-Mobile and U.S. v. JBS and National Beef. For his work on these and other cases, he was honored with the Antitrust Division’s Award of Distinction in 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2008.
Biegel, who recently relocated from the firm’s Atlanta office, has been a leader of the U.S. antitrust bar for more than 15 years. He regularly represents leading U.S. and global companies on a broad range of antitrust issues, including matters before the DOJ and U.S. Federal Trade Commission, mergers and joint ventures, internal investigations, pricing and distribution practices, compliance counseling and training, multidistrict litigation and pre-merger reviews under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act and foreign competition laws. In addition to being recognized for his antitrust work by Chambers USA and Best Lawyers, he has served on the governing board of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law and chaired its Corporate Counseling Committee and is a former chair of the State Bar of Georgia Antitrust Section. He also is a former president of the Federalist Society’s Atlanta Lawyers Chapter and served on the legislative staff of U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).
“We are excited to add John and Adam to our D.C. team,” said Dennis Garris, partner in charge of Alston & Bird’s Washington, D.C., office. “Their arrival underscores the growth that we have experienced in this office as we continue to take advantage of opportunities to grow our litigation presence and add talent to meet the legal and regulatory needs of our global clients.”
Snyder and Biegel are the latest additions to Alston & Bird’s Washington, D.C., office. In June, the firm welcomed litigation partner Daniel Jarcho, who represents clients in federal trial court and appellate litigation involving federal regulatory issues.
